Tips For Renting A Wheelchair For Your Next Vacation

Needing to use a wheelchair on a regular basis doesn't mean that you can't travel and see the world. But in many cases, traveling with your own wheelchair can be difficult. A simple solution is to rent a wheel chair when you arrive at your destination. If you plan on renting a wheelchair during an upcoming vacation or trip, use the following tips:

Contact the Tourism Board

While there are many companies across the world that offer short-term wheelchair rentals, you may not know how to find them. If you want to save time, consider contacting the tourism board for the destination that you will be visiting. Most tourism boards have a comprehensive list of mobility equipment rental companies, and they can provide information about the companies that offer service in the area you will be visiting.

Book Your Rental in Advance

If you will be relying on a wheelchair during an upcoming trip, it is in your best interest to book your wheelchair rental as far in advance as possible. Doing so will ensure that you have the type of wheelchair that you need on the dates that you need it.

Be Prepared to Pay a Deposit

It is not uncommon for mobility equipment rental companies to require a deposit when booking a wheelchair rental. Deposits will most likely be higher for electric wheelchairs compared to traditional wheelchairs. While your deposit will be refunded when you return your rented wheelchair in good condition, it is important to have the funds available to pay the deposit at the time of rental.

Ask About Delivery

A lot of mobility equipment rental companies offer delivery and pick-up services, so you can have your wheelchair delivered to your hotel and picked up at the end of your stay. If you opt for delivery, make sure you are aware of any extra delivery fees, and inform the hotel that you're staying at that you are expecting a wheelchair rental to be delivered on the day you arrive.

Malfunction and Repair

Before signing a contract to rent a wheelchair, it is essential to ask how a mobility equipment rental company deals with malfunctions and repairs. Ideally, you should rent from a company that covers the cost of repairs and will re-deliver a new wheelchair if the first one they sent does not work properly. The company that you rent from should also provide information about what you should do if there is an emergency malfunction outside of regular business hours.
